International architectural competition Ephemeral Structures in the city of Athens
Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004
Athens: Large city, mythical and vast but certainly familiar, although simultaneously strange and inhospitable. A tender hearted whore open to any of us.
Athenian citizen: Champion of the Olympic game of survival. World record in adjustability.
The street: A battle field, all martial techniques tested and accepted.
Pedestrian: Target for extermination.
Body: Stiffness. Alike movements in a perpetual repetition.
It is time to leave the ground to fly like we do in our dreams. It is time for our body to struggle, not in the city jam or in the suffocating panting through narrow
passages, but to fly, to jump, to joke.
Since we are not made to fly but to walk, raping the ground and the micro cosmos which moves underneath it, let’s “move” like acrobats on a safety net. With soundless steps, but with cries and laughter, lets walk on a “net street” high up, away from the roaring machines
Almost everything is already there. The continuous balconies – theater boxes, the actors and the spectators – us. A net is needed to fill the void of communication and let each of us choose how s/he will flirt with it. One wakes up in the morning and goes to work not passing through her/his front door and taking the elevator, but through a stress – releasing jump. Children jump up and down laughing, discovering new imaginative games while the teenagers compete, laughing, touching one another each time they fall. Clapping is heard from a little balcony. It is grandma. The bodies get trained discovering a new way to walk. We will be fit for the Olympics shouldn’t we?
Athens 2004: Continuous adaptation and transformation. The different uses which can be described for this proposal are numerous but it is certain that the citizens of Athens will invent a new one every day transforming themselves just like their city.
